Voter Registration
You have both the right and the responsibility to elect the officials who will represent you best. Use it!

To register to vote, call the Board of Elections to receive a postage-paid voter registration form that allows you to mail back your registration. You can also register in person. Go to your local office of the City's Board of Elections, Monday through Friday, 9 am to 5 pm.
Any United States citizen 18 years or older can register to vote. Once you change your name, address or political party enrollment, you must re-register. If you want to choose among candidates put forward by a political party during primary elections, you must indicate your party preference on the voter registration form; only party members can vote in primary elections.
Every registered voter can vote in general elections. After you have registered, the Board of Elections will send you a postcard informing you of your election district and voting place. You need not bring the card when you go to vote.
There are a number of ways to register to vote. The recently enacted "Motor Voter Law" allows you to register when you go to the Department of Motor Vehicles for a driver's license or car registration.
Since many New Yorkers don't drive, most City agencies have been designated to provide voter registration and assistance, as well as the Police Department, the City University of New York, the Health and Hospitals Corporation, the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service, the Housing Authority, the New York Public Library, the Board of Education, and the Public Advocate's office.
For absentee ballots, call the voter information number.
