Statement of the Public Advocate on Plan B Emergency Contraception

In a letter to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Public Advocate for the City of New York Betsy Gotbaum strongly urged the FDA to move forward and approve over-the-counter sale of emergency contraception.

“Emergency contraception is a safe and effective pregnancy prevention tool,” Gotbaum said.

“Reducing the rate of unintended pregnancy is a significant public health priority for New York City , and approving over-the-counter sale of emergency contraception would be an important step toward reaching that end.”

“Emergency contraception is widely available with a prescription, however over-the-counter availability would increase access for the large number of women in New York City who are uninsured, or do not have an established relationship with a physician.”

“A woman’s ability to control her reproductive health is one of the most important facets of her overall health and wellbeing. Given the clear benefits of emergency contraception, the FDA should move to approve over-the-counter sale of Plan B and other similar contraceptives.”
