STATEMENT BY PUBLIC ADVOCATE BETSY GOTBAUM

I am deeply disturbed by allegations that the US Tennis Association discriminates against female and minority umpires. Discrimination of the kind alleged is unacceptable in New York City, which prides itself on diversity and tolerance. I have consistently used the full powers of my office, as designated by the City Charter, to fight discrimination, and I will do so in this matter. I call on the City's Commission on Human Rights to look into the charges. And I urge the Mayor to use the City's ownership of the National Tennis Center as leverage to pressure the Tennis Association to eliminate these ugly barriers to equality.
