Statement of Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum on the Passing of Grand Rebbe Moshe Teitelbaum

Rebbe Teitelbaum will be remembered as the man who, building on the legacy of his uncle Rebbe Yoel Teitelbaum, grew Satmar Hasidism into a thriving spiritual community, both here in the United States and abroad. Both wise and humble, he was an inspiration not only to his followers but to survivors of persecution and people of faith everywhere.

In 2001, I had the opportunity to meet with Rebbe Teitelbaum and receive a blessing from him. His graciousness and warmth have stayed with me ever since. On a subsequent tour of the Satmar community in Williamsburg, I was struck by the tremendous revitalization and expansion that both Grand Rebbes had accomplished, a remarkable rebirth for a people who had suffered so much.

That rebirth will continue with the memory Rebbe Moshe Teitelbaum as its guiding light. I send my condolences to his family and the entire Satmar community.
