Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum’s Statement on the Passing of Civil Rights Pioneer Rosa Parks

I was saddened to learn of Rosa Park’s passing. That she lived to the age of 92 is in itself symbolic of her great strength and enduring legacy as an American hero.

Rosa Parks exemplified the courage that helped launched the Civil Rights movement in America. She was a strong woman whose action deeply influenced the way the rest of America viewed the condition of blacks in the South. She served as an example to everyone, inspiring us to stand up for what is just, especially in the face of legalized discrimination. We will continue to rely on her influence as we work to improve race relations across our land.

Rosa Parks will forever occupy a place in American history for her brave defiance of segregation. There is no doubt that many of today’s leaders were empowered by her strength. She will be remembered each time that we stand up against injustice.
