Public Advocate Inspects New Schools in Queens
Continuing investigation into school construction

On Friday, August 23, Public Advocate inspected three newly constructed public schools in Queens that are set to open for the first time next week. The Public Advocate said, “Queens has some of the worst classroom overcrowding in the five boroughs so it’s great to see new seats opening up. Yet there is still a long way to go before we have enough classroom space for all Queens students. I’m glad to see these projects open on schedule--but we must make school construction less expensive and more efficient so that we can create even more new classroom seats. My office will continue to investigate school construction until the overcrowding crisis is resolved.”

P.S. 58 in Maspeth’s District 24, the largest of the new schools, will hold about 900 students in pre-K through 5th grade (6th starting next year). The school has multiple specialty rooms including an art room, a science room, a state-of-the-art computer room and a large auditorium. The Public Advocate found construction staff working around the clock to finish clean-up and landscaping so that the school will be ready opening day of classes next week.

P.S. 28 in Corona, across from the New York Hall of Science, is also in District 24. The school will have about 400 students (pre-K through 2). The new school has a library and a cafeteria that doubles as an assembly room. The Public Advocate found some minor unfinished work on some of the floors that was expected to be finished by Tuesday, August 26. The rest of the building is complete, and only awaiting the Food Services Unit to sign off on the kitchen.

P.S. 22 in Jackson Heights’ District 30, is complete and ready to open. It will have about 400 students (Pre K through 2). The cafeteria at this school will also double as a multi purpose room. All the equipment has arrived and the Public Advocate found some teachers already setting up their classes for opening day.
