Governor George E. Pataki
State Capitol
Albany, NY 12224
Dear Governor Pataki,
“Safety must be our top priority and we cannot wait for the
federal government to act.”
These were your words in August 2002 regarding Indian Point, and I could not agree more. For decades, Indian Point has been a concern to nearby residents in the four surrounding counties. Leaks, rusty lining and staff quality are just a few of the issues that have made headlines for the plant and nightmares for New Yorkers.
Since September 11 we have all been forced to reevaluate Indian Point. As you know, both jets used in the attack flew south along the Hudson River near Indian Point 2. Further, a recent report by the plant’s owner showed that security personnel may be physically unable to meet demands, have little experience and relevant qualifications, and are overworked. As New York City’s Public Advocate, I know that plant attacks or accidents could threaten the City with radiation sickness and contamination of food and water.
The current evacuation plans are inadequate to protect the public, as the Witt report you commissioned found. With the deadline approaching for certification of these plans, I urge you to refuse certification as the four counties surrounding the plant have already done. Whether it is protecting our borders, our schools, our parks or the communities within reach of nuclear power plants, safety must be New York’s top priority.
Sincerely,
Betsy Gotbaum
