Releases & Statements

New York City Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum released the following statement today on chaotic the state of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s financial crisis.
“The MTA is in a continual freefall toward financial disaster. Its management has failed to reign in this mammoth agency. We hear the MTA ’s claims of being broke every time the agency’s finances are reviewed, but let us consider what got them into this mess to begin with: cost overruns, missing capital, and maxed-out bond funding reminiscent of the kind that got us into the 1970s fiscal crisis. Now the MTA wants to eliminate 600 token clerks, raise fares again, and cut even more services. The Governor should clamp down on the fiscal irresponsibility of the MTA before the public and MTA employees are forced yet again to pay for this mismanagement. Our wallets have been hit hard enough.”
