New York City Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum participated this morning in a ribbon cutting ceremony in the East Village for the Robert Simon Complex, a new playground advocated for by her office and local parent activists.
“In the spring I was contacted by the parent activists who were frustrated that school security vehicles were parking on land that used to be a playground. My office, working alongside Council Member Lopez and other elected officials, went to work immediately to give the kids back their playground. This issue was a no-brainer and after hearing our outcry the Administration found somewhere else to park these vehicles and then went to work to rehabilitate the playground.
“Today’s ribbon-cutting ceremony is a victory for East Village parents and all the schoolchildren from Tompkins Square Middle School , The Earth School, and PS 64. I would like to thank everyone gathered here today for their hard work,” said Gotbaum.
“Anytime it comes down to resources for our schoolchildren or a place to park vehicles, the choice is clear,” Gotbaum added.
