Statement by Public Advocate Betsy
Gotbaum Following the Meeting with Mayor Bloomber, Elected Officials
and Community Leaders, on the Tragic Shooting in Queens
"The meeting today with Mayor Bloomberg, regarding the tragic
shooting in Queens, was a frank, wide-ranging discussion.
"I believe the Mayor's statements at his news conference
following the meeting were genuine and reflected his reaction
to the concerns of all the meeting participants. The investigation
should proceed expeditiously and all of our questions, especially
those of the Bell family, must be addressed.
"The way in which Mr. Bell died will resonate in this city
and across the nation for a long time to come and reflects poorly
on America's safest large city. We must never forget it and must
do a better job preventing such tragedies in the future."
