Statement by Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum on Midtown Explosion

MANHATTAN - Public Advocate Gotbaum released the following statement on the incident in midtown Manhattan this evening.

"As we continue to gather information about the incident in mid-town Manhattan, I ask for all New Yorkers to remain calm and to listen to the directions of the city's officials, especially the city's firefighters and law enforcement officials. To be clear, this is a water main break, not an incident of terrorism. New York's finest and bravest are already on the scene, working to contain this as much as possible. It is absolutely essential that New Yorkers, especially New Yorkers on the streets of midtown, move away from this area and allow these professionals to do their jobs.

"Time and again, New Yorkers have overcome challenges. I am heartened to know that as city officials work to overcome this challenge, New Yorkers will do everything they can to stand with them and to keep them in their hearts and prayers as they put their lives on the line."
