Statement by Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum on the Aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and Relief Efforts for the Victims

The hearts of all New Yorkers go out to the people of the Gulf Coast in this time of devastating tragedy. I am shocked and disappointed by the Bush administration's slow and scattershot response to the emergency. People have literally been left to die.

I call on all New Yorkers to help fill the void left by the federal government. This weekend, I volunteered by raising funds for the American Red Cross. Though we may feel helpless in the face of such immense suffering, all of us have something to contribute, be it necessities like clothing and toiletries, money, or time. Visit the Greater NY chapter of the American Red Cross at http://www.nyredcross.org to find out how you can help.
