Statement by Public Advocate Gotbaum on Albany's Agreement to Help Reduce Congestion

Public Advocate Gotbaum said, "New Yorkers across the city can breath a huge sigh of relief today. This new agreement means that we now are able to take advantage of $500 million in federal dollars to improve our mass transit system, not just into the central business district of Manhattan but also between the boroughs. It also means that we can now take some concrete steps to improve air quality, reduce asthma and get New Yorkers out of their cars and onto subways and buses. My hope is that the newly-created Commission will recognize the urgency of solving these citywide problems.

"I congratulate Governor Spitzer, Speaker Silver, Majority Leader Bruno and Mayor Bloomberg for all of their hard work and for their ability to look beyond the challenges and work together to make New York a cleaner, healthier city."
