by Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum on
Schools Identified as Failing Under No Child Left Behind
“Today we learned that additional
New York City public schools are considered failing under No Child
Left Behind. Yet somehow Chancellor Joel Klein thinks this news
is proof of the Department of Education’s ‘lasting
improvements’ in our schools.
“As someone who has fought to
improve our education system, I find today’s news disturbing.
And the idea that the Chancellor would try to make an increase
in the number of failing schools seem like an accomplishment is
truly disappointing. This just goes to show how much further we
have to go to repair our education system.”
