We are here today to
send a powerful message: we will not allow our fundamental rights
to be made a political football. We will not let President Bush’s
choice take away our choice.
We had hoped that the President would
act in the spirit moderation and nominate the kind of person the
vast majority of Americans want out of the next justice of the
Supreme Court—namely, someone who upholds the law.
Instead he chose someone to appease
the radical wing of his own party, a man who argued as a lawyer
that Roe v. Wade was ill-founded.
We cannot and we will not sit back,
cross our fingers, and hope that John Roberts will change his
mind once he’s risen to the highest court in the land.
We are standing up and fighting now
so that we can be sure that the right to choose is never abridged
or taken away.
President Bush is replacing a pro-choice
woman with an anti-choice man. We get the message he’s sending.
Now it’s time for him to hear ours.
