of Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum
on
State Court of Appeals Decision Against Gay Marriage
“I am disappointed that the
State Court of Appeals chose not to uphold the civil right to
marry for all people. The Court decided that the recognition of
same-sex marriage ‘is a question to be addressed by the
Legislature.’ I therefore strongly urge the Legislature
to support the right of same-sex couples to marry and to guarantee
them the same rights and benefits as other married couples, including
the right to medical decision-making for a partner, custody and
visitation rights, access to insurance, inheritance protections,
and death benefits.”
