Statement
by Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum on Mayor Bloomberg's 2030 Plan
MANHATTAN
– “New Yorkers should praise Mayor Bloomberg for his
efforts to bring together the private, public, and non-profit
communities to plan for an environmentally sustainable and economically
vibrant future for our City.
“The
release of the 2030 plan, however, is the beginning, not the end,
of the process. We now need to engage New Yorkers in conversations
about the challenges facing our City and work with them to devise
and implement solutions. Every New Yorker will need to own this
plan in order for it to become a reality.
“When
it comes to reducing congestion on our streets, we must not overlook
the importance of increasing access to public transit for all
New Yorkers. The Mayor's proposals to pilot bus rapid transit
and expand express bus service into the Central Business Districts
are steps in the right direction. Other cities throughout the
world have made good use of innovative bus systems to reduce congestion
and improve travel times. New York must be more innovative with
its own transportation network.
“Now,
more than ever, Mayor Bloomberg needs to talk with advocates,
public officials -- and all New Yorkers -- as we move forward
with making our City more environmentally sustainable. Together
we will lead the way.”
