Statement
by Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum on Supreme Court Decision
The
Supreme Court ruling is a shocking assault on women's basic rights
to make personal medical decisions. The court is choosing politics
and ideology over women’s health by upholding government
interference in decisions between patients and doctors. This ruling
sets an appalling precedent by supporting an abortion ban that
entirely neglects the health of women, including those with dangerous
pregnancies who will be put in serious jeopardy.
While
George W. Bush is wrong on this, at least he's been consistent.
Our former mayor Rudy Giuliani has flip-flopped on it so many
times, it's remarkable he can stand up straight, and he's certainly
not standing up for the rights of women.
As
Public Advocate, I am committed to working to ensure safe, affordable
and accessible healthcare for all women, and most important –
protecting a woman's right to choose.
